So here comes my first list dedicated specially to historical genre of Korean dramas. 2019 was certainly good as we got to see a handful of these kdramas than last year which was a total of just 3. This year we had 10 more than that and all are a worth watch for any historical Korean drama lover.

The following list include almost all the historical Korean dramas from 2019 with one drama special “Birthday Letter” that shows a love story of the time when Korea was under Japanese rule, while “Different Dreams” shows the making of first provisional government of Korea under that time. Romance is in the historical air in “The Crowned Clown”, “Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung” and “The Tale of Nokdu”, while you see a matchmaking agency of the Joseon period of Korea in “Flower Crew : Joseon Marriage Agency”. And a zombie historical drama “Kingdom” was something we never expected to encounter released this year.

1. The Crowned Clown

The story of “The Crowned Clown” goes like this. Lee Hun (Yeo Jin-goo) is a king who is in danger of being assassinated. In order to save the king a man named Ha Sun (Yeo Jin-Goo) who looks exactly like the king impersonates the king in the palace.

Ha Sun was adopted by a group of clowns after his parents death. So he grew up performing as a clown. In the palace he falls in love with the Queen Yoo So-Woon (Lee Se-young ).

2. Kingdom

Kdrama “Kingdom” will tell a thriller story in which a monstrous epidemic spreads across the country in the Joseon period, resulting of which, people turn into zombies. The crowned prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) goes on a suicide mission to investigate about the mysterious plague and save the kingdom.

3. Haechi

The story of “Haechi” goes like this. Born from a woman of lower class family, Lee Geum (Jung Il-woo) is not considered to be a king. Yeo-Ji (Go Ara), Park Moon-Soo (Kwon Yul) and Dal-Moon (Park Hoon), all with excellent skills in martial arts come together to make Lee Geum the new king and reform the Saheonbu. The story is set in Joseon Dynasty period.

4. The Nokdu Flower

“The Nokdu Flower” Korean drama will tell the story of Baek Yi Kang and Baek Yi Hyun. Baek Yi Kang and Baek Yi Hyun are both brothers. Baek Yi Kang (Jo Jung-suk) is the son of his father’s second wife who was his slave before. He is of cold attitude. Baek Yi Hyun (Yoon Shi-yoon) who is the younger brother is the son of his father’s first wife. They both get separated during the Donghak Peasant’s Movement in 1894.

5. Different Dreams

Korean drama “Different dreams” will tell the story of a time when Korea was under Japanese rule. Lee Young-Jin (Lee Yo-won) a surgeon who was raised by Japanese parents, works for a secret society whose mission is Korean Independence. It becomes the provisional government of Korea.

6. Arthdal Chronicles

“Arthdal Chronicles” story revolves around the power struggles, love and growth of the ancient city of Arthdal, the capital of Gojoseon. Eun Seom (Song Joong-ki), is a cursed child born in Blue Stone Village under an ominous sign. Due to this, people of Arthdal considers him a threat. His mother takes him away in order to save him. He later comes back to Arthdal. Tan Ya (Kim Ji-won), is a woman born under a cursed sign and who overcomes adversity to become the first female politician of Arthdal. She is Eun Seom’s first love. Ta Gon (Jang Dong-gun), is a war hero of Arthdal. He is the most powerful person in Arthdal and everybody fears him. He wishes to become the first king of Arthdal. Ta Gon also loves Tae Al Ha. Tae Al Ha (Kim Ok-vin) also wishes to become the queen of Arthdal.

7. Joseon Survival

“Joseon Survival” will tell a story of friendship between a deliveryman from 2019 called Han Jung Rok who was once a national archer and a famous thief from the Joseon dynasty called Im Kkeok Jeong. Han Jung Rok ends up traveling to the past with his first love, Lee Hye Jin. Im Kkeok Jeong and Han Jung Rok both join together to fight for their loved ones.

8. Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung

“Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung” will show the romance between a female rookie historian named Goo Hae Ryung (Shin Se Kyung) and prince Yi Rim (Cha Eun Woo). Yi Rim is also a romance novelist but he has never dated anyone. The drama will also show the change in prejudices regarding women working in the palace.

9. Birthday Letter

The story of the drama “Birthday Letter” goes like this. Kim Mu Gil is an old man who during his old days was forced to work in Hiroshima during Japan’s occupation of Korea. Surprisingly one day he receives a letter from his first love Yeo Il Ae. Kim Jae Yoon (Jeon So Min) who is Kim Mu Gil’s granddaughter upon seeing the letter decides to find his grandfather’s first love and she then discovers about their emotional past along the way. The drama will focus on the painful lives of the youth at the times of Japanese occupation of Korea, Korea’s liberation, and the Korean War.

10. Flower Crew : Joseon Marriage Agency

“Flower Crew : Joseon Marriage Agency” will tell the love story of a king named Lee Soo (Seo Ji Hoon) and a poor woman named Gae Ddong (Gong Seung Yeon) in Joseon Dynasty. Due to their different status they cannot marry. So the king asks the best Marriage Agency of Joseon that is “Flower Crew” to protect her and make her a noble woman.

11. The Tale Of Nokdu

“The Tale Of Nokdu” is a rom-com story set in Joseon Dynasty. Jeon Nok Du (Jang Dong Yoon) who belongs to a noble family runs away from his house due to the burden of marrying a woman his family arranged for him. He then stays in a widow village where he disguises himself as a woman. There he meets Dong Dong Joo (Kim So Hyun) who is unwillingly training to become a gisaeng.

12. My Country

“My Country” will tell the story of Nam Sun Ho (Woo Do Hwan) who is the son of a servant, but still has excellent skills in literary and martial arts. He wishes to be in military. Seo Hwi (Yang Se Jong) is a very good friend of Nam Sun Ho. His dream of going to military and his friendship with Seo Hwi both suffers after his father gets involved in corruption.

13. Selection- Girls’ War

“Selection: The War Between Girls” will tell the story of Kang Eun Bo (Jin Se Yeon) who must win a competition which could make her the queen without relying on any political power. She wants to become the queen in order to find the secret of her twin sister’s murder. –(Upcoming)

  1. I love lists by genre. This is a great lineup. I studied history in college so I am a sucker for the historical dramas. I love them. I was shocked that I have only seen three of these. I will use this list as a reference as I try to fit the rest of them in. Thanks for putting this together.

      1. I have seen The Crowned Clown, which I think was my favorite historical this year, and Haechi, and Rookie Historian. I’ve been waiting for The Tale of Nokdu to finish, so I could start it. And I will definitely put Different Dreams at the top of my list too. Thanks for the recommendation.

  2. I’ve watched all of them except Birthday Letter and Joseon Survival. I’ll have to check out these two as I wait for the last upcoming drama for this year. Thanks for putting together this list, I believe my favorites are the Crowned Clown and Arthdal.

  3. I have seen all of the them except Haechi, Different Dreams, the Birthday Letter and Joseon Survival. Selection (Queen: Love and War) has not started yet, but it looks very promising. 2019 has been a great years for sageuks. My favorites are The Crowned Clown, Kingdom, Nokdu Flower, The Tale of Nokdu, and My Country.
